NHRMC and Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center Bring AirLink to Brunswick County

When medical emergencies arise, every second counts no matter your location. Until recently, patients in need of emergency transport from Brunswick Medical Center or more rural areas had to opt for ground transport or wait for a helicopter from outside Brunswick County to arrive. Now, thanks to a new partnership between Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center and New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC), an AirLink aircraft is stationed much closer at the Brunswick campus. The fully equipped emergency helicopter is on call 24/7, 365 days a year.

“Patients in need of help aren’t focused on county lines,” said John Gizdic, NHRMC’s president and CEO, in a press release. “This partnership illustrates how health systems can work together to get patients to the right level of care at the right time.”

With AirLink, patients in need of critical, specialty interventions will receive expedited care from the scene to their arrival at NHRMC and other trauma centers. When air service is not readily available, an NHRMC VitaLink transport vehicle also based at Brunswick Medical Center will provide speedy ground transport.

AirLink and VitaLink teams include highly trained critical care transport teams, complete with board-certified critical care paramedics and registered nurses. Inside the AirLink helicopter, medical professionals have access to highly specialized equipment including blood products, laboratory testing, high-flow nasal cannulas, ventilators and cardiac monitors.

For those suffering from unexpected cardiovascular and cerebrovascular emergencies like heart attack and stroke, AirLink can provide life-saving medical treatment. In fact, AirLink is the recipient of the Mission: Lifeline Gold Plus EMS Recognition for the quality care it provides patients suffering from the most severe form of heart attack, ST-Segment Myocardial Infarction.

Brunswick County’s AirLink aircraft will join a fleet of three helicopters, with two others stationed in Whiteville and outside Jacksonville. AirLink is southeastern North Carolina’s first air ambulance service, established in 2001. Equipped with on-board weather radar, night-vision goggles, Sky Connect Satellite Tracking, Terrain Avoidance Warning System and Traffic Alert and Avoidance System, AirLink provides extremely safe and efficient transport. Along with emergency medical care and transport, AirLink also aids in missing person searches, sponsors emergency and critical care education programs and provides Landing Zone classes for Fire and EMS groups.

From car and boating accidents to heart attacks and strokes, medical emergencies are anything but predictable. Airlink provides Brunswick County residents with a stronger lifeline to our area’s highest-quality trauma centers. When you need it most, help will arrive and much faster from now on.
