Fun for the Littles
Preschool activities are coming up at Museum of Coastal Carolina and Ingram Planetarium.
Museum of Coastal Carolina and Ingram Planetarium invite little learners to join them for a day of STEM activities and fun this winter.
“Our mission is to inspire curiosity about our coastal environment and broader natural universe through experiences that are educational, science based, interactive, educational and fun,” says Jamie Justice, director of programs and exhibits. “This event provides engaging and interactive activities for little learners focused on space and the ocean environment, which will also engage caretakers as they explore with their children.”
On Friday, February 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Museum of Coastal Carolina in Ocean Isle Beach will offer preschool activities throughout the museum with a special Sea Tales program at 11:30 a.m. Explore the ocean as you travel through the museum with a variety of fine motor, sensory and movement activities and crafts.
Activities include making a scuba mask and completing a photo book, practicing writing and cutting skills, measuring fish and comparing sizes.
Visitors also can have fun trying to move like an ocean animal.
At Ingram Planetarium in Sunset Beach, visitors can experience the newest dome theater show One World, One Big Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure featuring Big Bird and Elmo from Sesame Street. After the show, check out fine motor and sensory activities in the Science Hall.
In the 25-minute film, Elmo and Big Bird live in the United States and Hu Hu Zhu lives far away in China, but they discover that they still see the same stars at night! The film is followed by a live star show exploring the stars we can see in the night sky.
After leaving the dome theatre, visitors are encouraged to participate in hands-on activities where young explorers have fun while practicing their lacing skills to make constellations, exploring patterns of planets, trying to catch a falling star, making a telescope, and more.
Learning about science and math related to the environment promotes engagement, understanding and confidence.
“When children are interested and engaged in nature and the environment around them, they connect to it and care more about it, leading them to become adults who want to learn more about and care for their environment,” Justice says.
Parking at both locations is free to the public. Entrance fees for Museum of Coastal Carolina and Ingram Planetarium apply, and it is recommended to purchase tickets for One World, One Sky in advance. Purchase tickets at museumplanetarium.org/purchase-tickets/
