Free Fall Cooking Classes

Join free Cooking at Home Classes in Leland this fall to learn essential kitchen skills, enjoy live demos, and connect with your community every Monday.

NC Cooperative Extension is inviting the public to join its Cooking at Home Classes in Leland, designed for beginners and intermediate cooks looking to build kitchen confidence and skills. Hosted by Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent Avery Ashley, this popular five-week series will be held at the Brunswick Center at Leland (Leland Senior Center), located at 121 Town Hall Drive NE.

Classes take place every Monday from October 27 through November 24, 10:00–11:30 a.m. Each session focuses on essential cooking techniques, meal management tips, and live demonstrations with food samples. Whether you’re new to cooking or looking to sharpen your skills, these classes offer valuable hands-on experience in a supportive environment.

The weekly topics include:

• Week 1: Meal planning, food safety, measuring, knife skills, and making the most of ingredients on hand. Demo and tasting with herbs and spices.
• Week 2: Exploring rice, beans, stocks, and soups, plus an introduction to mirepoix and roux.
• Week 3: Salads, sandwiches, tortillas, snacks, with a demo on homemade dressings and pan-fried tacos.
• Week 4: Cooking vegetables and fish, comparing fresh, frozen, and canned foods, and understanding the Maillard reaction. Demo features roasted and sautéed vegetables.
• Week 5: Poultry, eggs, and casseroles.
