Rita Sellers of Brunswick Community College’s Brunswick Interagency Program receives the Kiwanis Community Service Award.

The Kiwanis Club of Southport-Oak Island has selected Rita Sellers, a lead instructor for Brunswick Community College’s Brunswick Interagency Program (BIP), as the latest recipient of the Kiwanis Award for Excellence in Community Service.

BIP serves adults diagnosed with intellectual disabilities. The program’s mission is to enable students to reach their full potential, become more independent and fully participate in their communities.

Sellers, who has been with BIP for 31 years, serves as a liaison between instructional staff, administration, students and families. She helps direct learning activities for students functioning on different cognitive levels and with differing learning styles. Sellers also assists students in various community projects and activities, helping to increase social skills and expand the students’ knowledge base.

“Rita has developed a close relationship with the students, many of whom have considered her part of their families,” says Jack Addicks, chair of the Kiwanis Award for Excellence in Community Service program. “Her passion for Brunswick County’s citizens with disabilities is exceptional and goes well beyond the scope of her job description.”

Sellers also serves as BIP’s Program Advisor for the Kiwanis Aktion Club program. The Aktion Club is a service leadership program that provides adults 18 years or older living with disabilities opportunities to give back to their communities, build leadership and decision-making skills, and develop their talents. Sellers organizes Aktion Club members participating in community service programs and participates in board and membership meetings.

Sellers also works with Brunswick Family Assistance, Brunswick County Special Olympics, Matthew’s Ministry, Meals on Wheels and Brunswick County Sherriff’s Protective Services.

The Award for Excellence in Community Service is given by the Kiwanis Club of Southport-Oak Island, which is dedicated to serving the children of Brunswick County through service, education, guidance and leadership. The club supports numerous programs in the county’s elementary, middle and high schools designed to instill a life-long commitment to service among students of all ages and to develop the skills necessary to become community leaders.
