At last! After being “homeless” for almost two years, The Artisans have found the perfect location for their new gallery – the old Southport Realty building at 114 S. Howe St., Southport.

And to celebrate their new home, they are sponsoring a fundraiser for their nonprofit arm, SUFA (Stepping Up For Arts) scheduled for Monday, June 15, and Tuesday, June 16 from 3:00-7:00 p.m.

At the fundraiser, you will get a chance to do some early shopping before The Artisans have their official opening on Wednesday, June 17. Each visitor will be asked to donate $10 to SUFA, a 501(c)3 organization. Due to the coronavirus self-distancing restrictions, you will need to make a reservation for the time of your visit by emailing The Artisans’ president, Donna Kanich, at Masks will be required for all workers and patrons, as well as the use of a hand sanitizer before shopping.

SUFA promotes and supports the arts in Brunswick County by providing scholarships for high school seniors who are going on to college to continue their arts education. Each year they also award grants to Brunswick County teachers to provide equipment and supplies for specialized programs and art-related field trips that they would not otherwise be able to offer.

The members of The Artisans have worked hard to refurbish their new building. They have been sanding, painting, cleaning, and power washing the outside for weeks. And trimming the bushes and weeding the lawn to show off this wonderfully well-preserved two-story home which was originally the Thompson-Williamson House built circa 1873, and is one of the oldest homes in Southport.

The Artisans Gallery represents the work of nearly 70 artists and artisans. They have paintings, pottery, photographs, and wood carvings for sale by some of the community’s most well-known artists and craftsmen. They also have an extensive line of jewelry, fabric arts, knitted children’s sweaters, baskets, painted trays, and other one-of-a-kind gift items.

On Wednesday, June 17, The Artisans Gallery will have their official opening, and from then on they will be open for regular business hours: Monday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
