Susan and Hart Merriam — Ocean Isle Beach —
Susan and Hart Merriam residents of Ocean Isle Beach share their story on how they ended up in Brunswick County.
Where did you live before relocating to Brunswick County and what was your occupation?
We moved from Apex, North Carolina. Susan is a financial coordinator for BASF. Hart is a sales manager for GE Company. Both of our companies afforded us the opportunity to work out of our new beach house.
Why did you choose to move here and did you previously have friends or family here?
We vacationed the last 10 years at various Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina beaches in search of the perfect spot to retire. We chose Ocean Isle Beach because of its relaxing atmosphere and its close proximity to Myrtle Beach and Wilmington. A laidback location with access to the beach, lots of restaurants and many activities led us to our new home. We have several friends from places we have lived who have moved to Brunswick County to retire.
What community did you decide to move to and why?
We purchased a Windjammer condominium three years ago to have a vacation home at the beach. When Hart’s office in Raleigh was closed, we moved into the condo permanently. We also started looking for the perfect lot on which to build.
What is your job or what are your hobbies here?
We both still work the same jobs out of our home office. In our spare time we enjoy our pool, treasure hunt on the beach and spend time with friends and family.
How long have you lived here?
We moved to Ocean Isle Beach permanently in August 2018.
Who built your home and why did you decide to build with them?
Our Realtor, Anne Arnold, and her husband, Jerry Baker, a home builder, showed us a beautiful new reverse floor plan home on Holden Beach. We loved the home but preferred Ocean Isle Beach. Since Jerry had his hands full, they recommended Scott Quaintance from Carolina Bluewater Construction. Scott listened to our needs and personally designed the home to our specification. Scott and his team are professional, reliable and hard working. As a result, our beautiful new home was finished one month early and the final walk-through punch list had zero items on it. Scott lived up to his excellent reputation in every way.
What’s your favorite thing about southeastern North Carolina?
Our favorite thing is how the stress goes away when driving over the Ocean Isle Beach causeway. The laidback, friendly atmosphere is exactly what we were looking for.
