Showing Support for Veterans

Operation North State’s Peer Fishin’ Festival will host North Carolina’s wounded warriors and disabled veterans at Oak Island Fishing Pier from October 23 to 27. Volunteers and donations are needed.

Operation North State (ONS) and its supporters and volunteers are calling on people and businesses in the Oak Island, Southport and the Brunswick County beach communities to help support the upcoming 8th Annual Peer Fishin’ Festival.

From Monday, October 23 through Friday, October 27 Operation North State, the Oak Island Fishing Pier and the community will host 500 to 550 wounded warriors/disabled veterans (DVets) and their respective guests, sponsors, pier mates and volunteers for five days of fun, fishing and fellowship. The festival will be held rain or shine on the Oak Island Fishing Pier.

According to Operation North State’s Founder/Volunteer Terry Snyder, the event is being held at the request of the wounded warriors/DVets who have fished in ONS’s Top Shelf Fishin’ Festivals throughout the state over the past 11 years: “Take us fishing at the beach!” ONS is making it happen with the Peer Fishin’ Festival, one of nine Fishin’ Festivals that ONS hosts throughout North Carolina each year.

“There is nothing else like our Fishin’ Festivals’ schedule in the country,” Snyder says. “The wounded warriors / DVets are so excited to have the opportunity to return to Oak Island this year and include their families and friends in the festival as well. Likewise, our sponsors and volunteers are honored to be part of the festival and to give back.”

The 8th Annual Peer Fishin’ Festival is FREE to wounded warriors/DVets and their respective guests. Each wounded warrior/DVet and their guests will receive free daily fishing passes, fishing equipment if needed, refreshments and lunch.

“Operation North State is grateful to the pier mates from the community for providing their time, expertise and equipment,” Snyder said.

How to Help with the Peer Fishing Festival
ONS is requesting assistance and participation in the festival as follows:
• Spread the word. Spots are still available for wounded warriors/DVets to attend.
• Serve as a Pier-Mate: Assist a group of wounded warriors/DVets on the pier.
• Donate products, services and/or cash for the dinner, snacks, beverages and prizes.
• Provide a covered dish for breakfast or lunch (the covered dishes are so popular).
• Come visit the pier Monday, October 23 through Friday, October 27 and cheer on these special Americans.
• If you have a Super Senior Veteran in your life, please bring him or her to the pier for a few hours any day of the week to visit with fellow veterans.
Along with fishing, foods, fellowship and friendships, the Peer Fishin’ Festival will feature special themes and activities throughout the week. The current planned activities are the display of a large American Flag by the Oak Island Fire Department’s ladder truck on our Red, White & Blue Day, attendance of service and companion dogs, hosting Super Senior veterans, music, kite flying, a North Carolina Day, etc.
