Residential Showcase: Sandy & Bernie Bisbey of Ocean Isle Beach
Back in 1970, when Brunswick County’s population was only around 24,000, most of the people who lived here were born here. But then the word got out about Brunswick County and all of its wonderfulness and people began to move here. Sandy and Bernie Bisbey residents of Ocean Isle Beach share their story about how they ended up in southern Brunswick County.
Where did you live before relocating to Brunswick County and what was your occupation? We moved from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where we were both born and raised. Bernie was employed in construction, and Sandy worked in administration for a psychiatric practice.
Why did you choose to move here and did you previously have friends or family here? We vacationed in North Myrtle Beach for many years when our children were young, so we were somewhat familiar with the area. However, when we decided to retire, we wanted a less congested tourist environment. We were interested in a slower-paced, laidback community and found that in Ocean Isle Beach. Although we left all our family and friends in Pittsburgh, we were confident they would all find time to visit us.
What community did you decide to move to and why? We settled in the Bill Clark community of The Retreat at Ocean Isle Beach. The model home we toured was just to our taste and beautifully appointed. We love the fact that we are able to walk to stores and that the beach is 1 mile over the bridge, not to mention the spectacular view of the ICW and ocean from the bridge. We have found a heartwarming sense of fellowship with our new neighbors in the short amount of time we have lived here. This has helped us greatly in transitioning from the North.
What is your job or what are your hobbies here? We have both settled into retirement quite well. We enjoy meeting anyone and everyone in the neighborhood and participating in the events the activities committee organizes — bowling, parties and games as well as the Friday night concerts.
How long have you lived here? We have lived here 10 months. Who built your home and why did you decide to build with them? We chose Bill Clark. The quality of construction and amenities offered here at The Retreat made it an easy decision. We felt confident with our project manager, Patrick Boyd, and sales person Debbie Dorset.
What’s your favorite thing about southeastern North Carolina? The weather and proximity to a spectacular beach and, of course, the breathtaking sunsets!
