Residential Showcase: Mary and Jack Harmon
Their Journey to St. James Plantation
Where did you live before relocating to Brunswick County and what was your job?
Mary and I lived in Bear Delaware for 26 years before coming to Brunswick County. Mary was a fraud investigator with Bank of America, and I was an insurance agent with Prudential for 30 years.
Why did you choose to move here and did you previously have friends or family here?
We saw an ad in Where to Retire Magazine and stopped in on our trip to Florida. We took a tour and fell in love with the area. It’s close to the beach, and there was an Artisans Club for Mary and a Fishing Club for me. The people we met were so friendly. Everybody said hi to us. We didn’t know a soul before we came here.
What community did you decide to move to and why?
St. James Plantation was the only community we visited. St. James had everything we wanted. More social activities than you could possibly want, including a marina in the neighborhood.
What is your job or what are your hobbies here?
For me it’s fishing, and Mary has been a card maker for the last 20 years. We both are retired.
How long have you lived here?
We moved here in January of 2019; however, we bought our lot in November of 2014.
Who built your home and why did you decide to build with them?
Legacy Homes by Bill Clark was our builder. They offered the most for our budget. It’s not easy to build a home long distance, but our experience with Bill Clark was wonderful. We got pictures from our contact Brea Faircloth weekly with updates on the progress. They have been very responsive to all our concerns.
What’s your favorite thing about southeastern North Carolina?
The people are the friendliest we have ever met. Whether we are at the grocery store, post office or on the beach, everyone has a smile and something nice to say.
