Matt Davis: Internationally Recognized Filmmaker

Brunswick County’s Life Stage Films is a small company making big waves in the global film industry. The business was recognized recently by its top industry publication, EventDVmagazine, as one of the 25 hottest and most influential event filmmakers in the world. The honor is a result of several readers recommending life stage Films through a nomination process. Life Stage Films was one of the few finalists selected from five countries and four continents.

Owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Matt and Melissa Davis, Leland-based Life Stage Films was founded in 2006 after the couple returned from a mission trip to Mexico.

“We returned home after filming a humanitarian aid documentary and realized that capturing emotional moments on film was what we wanted to do for the rest of our lives,” explains Matt.

The couple decided to branch out to include wedding and event videography in their services in order to help break into the industry. Life Stage Films is now well known for its unique style of wedding videography.

“We try to do things a little differently,” says Matt. “Our work doesn’t scream ‘wedding video.’ Our videos are edgy, fresh and entertaining. Like a movie, our films capture the emotion of the day. Moments that other videographers might miss.”

In addition to its award-winning wedding videos, documentaries and event videography, Life Stage Films also offers baby story and family history videos, corporate marketing videos and videographer coaching.

Although Matt and Melissa live and work in Leland, their growing business takes them up and down the coast and everywhere in between, shooting weddings from Bald Head Island to Boston. And their continued passion for filming documentaries for nonprofit organizations in developing countries takes them around the globe. Perhaps some of the most acclaimed documentary work produced by Life Stage Films is a result of its partnerships with Wilmington- based Port City Community Church’s Hope 127 in Kenya, as well as Save a Generation in Nicaragua.

But this time, it’s their wedding videos that have captured the spotlight. “This award program through EventDVmagazine is like our industry’s Academy Awards,” says Matt. “We’re really proud of this recognition. It’s a testament to our mission statement: ‘To impact people in a positive way’. If we craft a wedding film that our clients want to watch over and over, it positively impacts their marriage, their life and their family. And that’s our goal.”
