It’s Market Time!
Sunset Beach Summer Market returns for the 2023 season on Thursday, May 4.
Angie’s Fresh Produce from Southport will again offer a huge selection of farm fresh produce from their farm as well as from farms of small area growers. Among other items offered are her own farm fresh eggs and canned goods from local small businesses. Bostic Farms will be there with fresh produce including strawberries on opening day, and Eden’s Produce will return to the market at the end of May, giving shoppers a wide variety of farm fresh produce.
Among those artisans returning to market are award-winning nature photographer Gary Baird and Seagrove potter Mark Koepnick, whose pottery has become a favorite with locals as well as visitors.
“Some people return every year to see what’s new at Koepnick Pottery and to add to their collection,” says Chris Wilson, co-owner/ manager of Pure Markets.
Sherry Eden returns with her ever-evolving art collection including photography, paintings and jewelry. A market favorite, All Beaded Up will be back, as will Montana Steele with her authentic sea glass jewelry harvested from the waters of the Bahamas. Another long-time favorite set to return is Coastal Tides with their beachy soaps and all-natural candles, as is Julie Bradley with her Julie’s Birds.
Others returning are Jen McRae of McRae Designs with her original, colorful and ever-popular earrings.
Alpaca Fina has new items for the season made from hand-spun wool from the alpacas they raise at their farm. Adelia Spivey returns with her beach-inspired jewelry, as does Kassie Santelli. Ready to plant the garden? Chris Miller of Ghostal Peppers will have vegetable and herb plants ready for the season as well as pepper jams and sauces.
The market has added a number of new vendors, some who will be joining the market as part-time or full-time attendees. Among them are silversmith Blue Abele; Tom Allen with his handmade surfboards; Julie’s Northwoods Naturals; and Shark Teeth Mega Store with shark teeth being harvested by the owner, Zak Dewitt, off the Carolina coastal waters. In addition there will be pottery by Diana Romance Green, Salt Meadow Pottery and Walter Pottery, all of whom are part-time vendors. Agape Market joins as a full-time vendor with natural cleaning products as well as tea towels and more.
There will be new and different vendors attending each week.
A variety of beach decor will be available, along with original art, local honey, natural body products, wood art, fabric art, repurposed art, wooden benches and tables, organic skin care items, handmade baskets and much more. “There will be something for everyone,” Wilson says.
Shoppers will be able to buy baked goods and snacks for enjoying at the market while overlooking the waterway and enjoying the cool ocean breeze. Available will be fresh-squeezed lemonade, pies and pastries, healthy snacks from Joe’s Mom, Blondiez’s donuts and Jason’s famous Dixieland Kettle Corn.
New to the market in May is Kona Ice, where children and adults alike can pour their own flavors from the dispensers at the side of the truck.
“Our markets have become very popular with vendors because of our strict requirement that all items must be handmade, homemade or homegrown,” Wilson says. “There will be new pottery, new glass art, new soaps, plants and more each week.”
