In the Spirit of the Season

My Azalea cocktail has a pretty pink color and refreshing effervescence that is just right for spring festivals and celebrations.

A similar version of the Azalea cocktail was the official cocktail of the Masters golf tournament, and with the Azalea Festival being held April 3 to 7 in Wilmington, I thought this was the perfect time to offer my rendition of the Azalea cocktail.

There are not any actual azalea flowers in this cocktail because all parts of the azalea plant are poisonous to consume. This refreshing and light cocktail gets its name from its lovely color, perfect for spring festival season.

I had the pleasure of attending the Azalea Festival Garden Party a few years ago, and one of the signature cocktails of the event was a Lavender Azalea cocktail. That drink was a purple color, unlike the pretty pink color in my version; nonetheless, the flavor is very similar.

Much like the high society that attends the Masters golf tournament, the Azalea Festival Garden Party was a who’s who of Wilmingtonians. I felt very important rubbing elbows with the Garden Party attendees while sipping my effervescent Azalea drink. After taking three years of cotillion as a child, I sipped with my pinky up — my mom would have been so proud.

The heat was almost unbearable in my fascinator and chiffon dress, but the Azalea cocktail was perfect to combat the heat. This cocktail is sweet, fruity, a little citrusy and very refreshing.

If you are hosting a gathering and want to serve this drink, feel free to bump up the recipe to fill a pitcher and serve it with lemon slices or ice cubes with lemon slices inside.

With just a few simple ingredients you too can create an upper-class cocktail for everyone to enjoy.

Remember, pinky up.
