Hammerheads Youth Soccer Comes to Brunswick County

It’s Hammer time! “Hammerheads South,” that is. The Wilmington Hammerheads Youth Soccer Organization has long been providing high-level competitive soccer for kids in the Wilmington area. This fall, for the first time, Brunswick County players ages seven to ten will get a piece of the action as Hammerheads expands across the bridge. Can’t touch this!

“Hammerheads South,” Brunswick County’s very own junior competitive league launches August 28!

“We’re doing a grassroots approach starting with the juniors. I’ve got a tremendous support team in place, a group of over 20 people now in administration and coaching ready to go,” said John Adams, Director of Coaching for Wilmington Hammerheads Youth FC and the one heading up Hammerheads South.

Adams, a Brunswick County resident himself with a 7-year-old son who’s a pretty good soccer player, says it was time.

“As a parent, you start to identify features in your child, when they are scoring 10 goals per game … it’s like school, when they are excelling, you want them to be in a group that works best for them,” he said.

The league is designed for players who want to take it to the next level, who need to more than just a recreational team experience. It’s hard core, intense training, two or more practices per week and competitive travel level games playing against some of the area’s very best.

“In our research, we were starting to see more players who do want to play year-round,” said Adams.

An estimated 180 Brunswick County players he says were making the trek to Wilmington multiple times a week for the Hammerheads program there, so why not add a Hammerheads program for those players?

“In Brunswick County, it’s always just been at the rec level, never materializing to get more competitive, that’s where we come in,” said Adams.

It’s a true partnership with Brunswick County Parks and Recreation. They are giving Hammerheads South full use of two fields free of charge. In exchange, Hammerheads South will conduct a series of free workshops for any 11 through 18-year-old Brunswick County players.

“The high school coaches have been the ones giving us the biggest high fives,” said Adams.

That’s because they know in the coming years, they will be gifted one heck of a team.

“We needed to build that grass roots that nucleus of players to change that culture, to develop a passion for the game,” said Adams.

So far 25 players are signed up with little to no advertising. Registration will be open through September 9. Games start September 16.

The free Hammerheads soccer workshops will be held at Cedar Grove, Ocean Isle Park, Smithville, and Northwest Parks.
