Bite into scratch-baked treats at The Jelly Cabinet, a new bakery in the Brooklyn Arts District in Downtown Wilmington.

Ready, bready, go! There’s a new bakery on the scene. The Jelly Cabinet opened its doors to Downtown Wilmington on July 1.

Behind the decadent delights, owner/baker Phillip Jones spreads sweetness in the form of cinnamon rolls (they’re so tasty they typically sell out), cakes, biscuits, cookies, cheesecakes and more goodies rotating on the daily. Special season offerings include such offerings as peach cobbler cinnamon rolls and bananas foster rolls with vanilla ice cream icing.

The talented culinary creator is currently the sole baker, with his mom and sister helping out with customer service.

All of his goodies are handmade in small batches with zero convenience products included.

“Every single thing that I have or use for the cinnamon rolls or anything in the bakery, I make myself,” Jones says.

Cooking has been a lifelong love affair for the new bakery owner. Jones grew up in the kitchen with his grandmother, inspiring him to join his high school’s culinary arts program and then pursue culinary studies via Cape Fear Community College’s baking program. After amassing a wealth of experience at restaurants and bakeries around town, Jones was ready to take the leap of faith to open his own bakery.

Reminiscing about his childhood baking days and retrieving ingredients from the jelly cabinet in his grandmother’s kitchen, Jones found a name for his bakery.

Fun fact: The namesake cabinet is inside the store.

“I am bringing the passion for food,” Jones says of his craft. “I love food, and I feel like the people who come in to eat can tell that I do. When you do things with passion and love, it takes it to a whole different level that I don’t think can be replicated.”

A step inside this sweet shop in the Brooklyn Arts District not only greets you with the aroma of baked goods, but also invites you to stay awhile amid its eclectic atmosphere. The interior features an industrial chic concept showcasing plants, a wood ceiling and an open kitchen … in essence, a vibe.

When he is not cooking up mouthwatering baked goods, Jones passes on his baking and pastry arts knowledge to the next generation at Cape Fear Community College, takes walks on the beach or around Downtown and seeks out culinary inspiration at local farmers markets. After all, life is what you bake it.
