Business Profile: Dew Oil Company Celebrates 70 Years Strong
In November 2019 Dew Oil Company celebrated 70 years in business.
A third-generation, family-owned business serving residential, commercial and industrial interests in Columbus, Brunswick and Bladen counties, Dew Oil Company is a thriving example of the good that a small, family-owned business can do in a community.
Eugene and Lila Dew founded Dew Oil Company in 1949. At that time a large paper mill, known then as Riegel Paper Company, was being built in Riegelwood, creating many opportunities for new businesses in the area, including an oil business. Dew Oil Company began as an ESSO distributorship providing sales and service of propane, fuels and ESSO lubricants to residential, commercial and industrial customers.
In 1974 Eugene and Lila’s son, Sandy, joined the family business. The company installed and serviced heating and air-conditioning units, stoves and gas fireplaces in the residential sector in addition to selling propane and kerosene for home heating and farming. Sandy was diligent in expanding into other businesses as well, such as convenience stores and bulk hazardous chemical transportation.
Today, Sandy’s daughter, Gina Dew Taylor, her husband, David Taylor, and life-long employee Buddy Smith handle the day-to-day operations. Their focus continues to be providing safe, efficient, quality service to residential, commercial and industrial customers. Dew Oil Company continues to sell propane and kerosene for home heating and propane, fuels and lubricants for on-site projects and equipment as well as large manufacturing plants in Columbus and Brunswick counties.
“We love this business!” Gina says. “We take pride in knowing that we are still doing business with many of the local families and businesses in their second and third generations also. There are several customers that continue to be very loyal because of the strong friendships my grandfather and father have developed over the past 70 years, and I hope to continue that going forward.”
After 70 years, the future still looks bright for Dew Oil Company.
“We have a strong commitment to the health, safety and welfare of our employees, their families and our customers,” Gina says. “We want to give back to a community that has given so much to us for so many years.”
