Cygnus Technologies is moving to a new $10 million facility in Leland.
The Town of Leland is pleased to announce that Cygnus Technologies, part of Maravai Life Sciences (NASDAQ: MRVI), has made the decision to relocate into a new 45,000-square-foot facility in the Waterford Commercial Park. The two-story office building will house 50 current employees with room to expand to a potential 150 employees within the next five years.
“We are excited to announce that Cygnus Technologies has made the decision to relocate to Leland,” says Gary Vidmar, economic and community development director for the Town of Leland. “This project shows that Leland is well positioned to attract emerging companies in the life sciences field.”
Founded in 1989 by Ken Hoffman and currently located in Southport, Cygnus Technologies was acquired by Maravai LifeSciences in November 2016. Cygnus Technologies is the biopharmaceutical industry’s partner in biologics safety testing.
Cygnus helps companies developing therapeutic proteins, vaccines, antibodies, plasma derivatives and gene therapies to ensure the safety of biotherapeutics prior to human trials, regulatory approval and commercial release. Cygnus Technologies develops, manufactures and distributes Host Cell Protein (HCP) and other Bioprocess impurity kits globally.
The new facility is anticipated to include 2300 square feet of specialized cold storage, state-of-the-art manufacturing and testing suites, R&D laboratories and a Mass Spectrometry Center of excellence.
“With the tremendous growth Cygnus Technologies has realized and is projecting for the future, we have outgrown our current facility,” says Christine Dolan, chief operating officer of Cygnus Technologies. “CIGG LLC and the Town of Leland were able to provide us with the best opportunity to meet our expansion and location needs. We are thrilled to become an integral part of the life sciences community in Leland and greater Wilmington, NC area. Our employees and visiting customers are excited about the accessibility to downtown and the ILM airport as well as the walkability of the Waterford Commercial Park, which will provide them with close access to a variety of restaurants, retail, services, medical offices and a multitude of housing opportunities.”
Wilmington-based CIGG LLC is the developer for the new Cygnus Technologies office building, which will be located at 1523 Old Waterford Way. The single-tenant building has been designed by Philip Humphrey with PGH Architecture. Construction is slated to begin this fall by Environments Unlimited Inc. CIGG will invest more than $10 million to build the new facility, with financing provided by First Bank. Jeremy Phillips of Environments Unlimited Commercial Real Estate negotiated the long-term lease with Cygnus on behalf of CIGG. Legal counsel to CIGG was provided by Jeff Keeter with Block, Crouch, Keeter, Behm & Sayed, LLP.
