Brunswick Wellness Coalition sponsors 5k/1 mile run/walk
Brunswick Wellness Coalition (BWC) sponsored a 5k/1 mile run/walk on Saturday, March 23, to emphasize the importance of physical activity to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Over 300 runners and walkers, ranging in age from one to over 80, participated in the event.
The start/finish line was at Dosher Memorial Hospital and took the runners through historic downtown Southport and along the Intracoastal Waterway on a beautiful sunny morning.
Preceding the event runners did a series of warm-up exercises led by Kim Ward, a professional yoga instructor. The participants were asked to bring healthy food for the Brunswick Senior Resources, Inc. food pantry. And they did – 600 pounds of it.
The runners were encouraged to come in costume, either as a team or organization theme or as their favorite healthy food. Carrots and blueberries were well represented.
There were also several booths promoting future events, like the Walk with a Doc program, scheduled for Saturday, May 11 at Boiling Spring Lakes Community Center. And the ongoing eat healthy food drive program. Health providers from several different organizations were there as well with educational materials and giveaways for the runners and spectators.
BWC executive director, Lindsay Maher, thanked Hamilton Realty Group and Omega Sports for sponsoring this annual BWC signature healthraiser event. She said, “The purpose of this event was to get people outside to welcome the warmer weather and celebrate a healthy lifestyle, and that is what we accomplished here today.”
