Books & Moore
Two brothers fulfill a dream with their new independent bookstore in Calabash.
A year ago, brothers Corey and Joseph “Joey” Moore were sitting around talking with their family at their parents’ home in Calabash when someone mentioned that Calabash had lots of shops but was missing a bookstore. Corey and Joey looked at each other and smiled as they both had the same thought — we should open a bookstore so people wouldn’t have to drive to North Myrtle Beach or Sunset Beach to pick up their favorite books.
Being shop owners appealed to them, and in the fall of 2020 that idea came to fruition. The sign went up at Books & Moore on Beach Drive, they stocked their shelves and welcomed their first customer on November 16.
Corey is a co-owner and manager who handles the administrative side of the store plus does sales. He coordinates the special orders when customers request new releases of fiction books — and customers get 10 percent off for ordering them from Books & Moore. Joey, the older of the two, is a co-owner who does sales and social media.
Corey graduated from East Carolina University in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. Immediately after college he worked for three years as a teacher and a sports coach in a secondary school in Cumberland County.
Originally from Fayetteville, most of Corey’s family had moved to Calabash five years ago, and he knew the area from frequently visiting his parents plus Joey’s family, so he made the move to Brunswick County a year ago.
Prior to becoming a store owner, Joey worked as a team leader for a couple of landscaping companies. He and his wife, Nikki, have a daughter, so Joey thought the idea of running a bookstore with his brother in Calabash was great in terms of being their own bosses and having flexible hours.
Before opening the bookstore, Corey noticed that there are lots of readers in Brunswick County.
“In talking with people, reading seems to be a big pastime, so I thought why not appeal to this community?” Corey says. “They’re interested.”
Books & Moore has about 2,000 books available plus Word Search games, crossword puzzles, an assortment of greeting cards, jewelry, artwork, mini Buddha statues and gnomes.
“We definitely want to add more locals’ artwork here in the bookstore in the months ahead,” Corey says. “It’s something we’re pursuing because promoting their work is important.”
They sell a few local writers’ books, including Thomas Kelso, Randall Lane and Jacqueline DeGroot, and they plan on expanding that selection. They also set up a box of old vinyl records and they are big hits, especially the old classic rock albums like Simon & Garfunkel and The Who.
“It’s going well at the bookstore because our shop is a convenient place for people to stop by to get gifts for friends and relatives no matter what the holiday or occasion happens to be,” Corey says.
While he wouldn’t recommend opening a store in the middle of a pandemic and during a tough economy, things are going just fine.
“In our case we’d planned our opening for months, and we weren’t going to let anything stop us from making our dream come true,” Corey says. “The community has been great about supporting Books & Moore, and we look forward to being the community bookstore serving the Calabash area for many years to come.”
