Outdoor Ice Skating Comes to Wilmington

A synthetic ice-skating rink guarantees family fun for the 2018 holiday season.

Yes, you read that right. An outdoor skating rink will open in Mayfaire Town Center on Wednesday, November 21 at 10 am and will be there through January 1, 2019.

Outdoor Ice Rink at Mayfaire Wilmington North CarolinaThis all started several years ago when Ben Rhodes saw his hometown of Rockingham, N.C., put together a similar facility. “They did it for three years, and it looked like such a good idea, I had to go check it out,” Rhodes says. “I thought this could definitely work at the beach.”

Rhodes, who owns Cape Fear Beach Rentals and is an officiant for high school football, basketball and lacrosse, has two other partners in the skating rink venture: Megan Petruska, owner of Petal Provisions, a floral and event company; and Clark Shay, a real estate agent and owner of Sport City, which hosts a local series of intramural adult recreation leagues.

The three of them have been working on getting the Holiday Skate Rink together since August and are excited to be able to provide this service for the Cape Fear Region.

“We are just excited about bringing something that the family can enjoy doing together around the holidays,” Rhodes says. It will be a great activity for friends and family, but Rhodes is also open to large groups booking events for birthday parties, corporate team building, church outings, etc. “We really want to get everyone to come out and give it a try,” he says.

How Is Mayfaire’s Synthetic Ice Rink Put Together?

Wilmington Outdoor ice skatingBasically, it looks like cutting board material. Once the panels are in place, pegs hold the bottom floor together. Then the sides are constructed to complete the structure of the rink. It took Rhodes, Petruska and Shay, with the help of others about five hours total to construct the panels and sides. The synthetic ice is a solid polymer material that is designed for skating and uses normal metal bladed ice skates.
