Kiwanis Club of North Brunswick helps motivate middle school students with incentive bags.
When Ruth Thompson, Communities in Schools Success Coach at Leland Middle School, reached out for help for local middle school students, Kiwanis Club of North Brunswick (KCNB) was happy to help.
Communities in Schools Success Coaches such as Thompson support student success by building relationships, helping students develop skills in goal setting and helping them learn to navigate the decision-making process. Thompson requested KCNB to help provide extra incentives for students on her caseload at Leland Middle.
KCNB also learned that some students at the the newest middle school in North Brunswick County, Town Creek Middle School, could use some help. Town Creek Middle does not have an assigned CIS Success Coach at this time. However, at recent meeting with the school’s principal, guidance counselor and administrative staff, KCNB learned that school-identified students could also benefit from an incentive bag.
Kiwanis Club members jumped into action, spending several hours organizing and filling 36 incentive bags. Peggy Bradt (Leland Middle School Lead), Cindy Bryant (Town Creek Middle School Lead), Eric Mens and Ken and Melody Formalarie filled each bag with a variety of snacks, a stress ball, pencils and sharpener, lined paper and word puzzles. An encouraging note to the student recipient was attached to each bag. Town Creek Middle students also received a fillable plastic water bottle (the school has installed reverse osmosis water stations with touchless refill (like in the airports). Brunswick Family Assistance donated all of the snack items.
The bags were delivered to Town Creek Middle Counselor Gerald Ziemba, who provided the bags to the identified students. Ruth Thompson provided the bags to the Leland Middle-identified students at their homes.
Kiwanis is a global organization dedicated to changing the world one child, one community at a time, and the incentive bags are just one example of the ways they help in the community.
