A Dedication to Orthopedic Outpatient Care

Brunswick Surgery Center achieves esteemed national accreditation just months after opening.

Brunswick Surgery Center, the region’s first outpatient surgery center dedicated to advanced orthopedics, has achieved national recognition with the prestigious AAAHC Certificate of Accreditation from the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. (AAAHC).

Gaining AAAHC accreditation demonstrates Brunswick Surgery Center’s commitment to providing safe, high-quality services to its patients by meeting rigorous, nationally recognized standards in a variety of categories. Accreditation is an external, independent review of a healthcare delivery organization’s policies, procedures, processes and outcomes. It reassures the public as well as insurers, governmental agencies and other medical professionals, of the quality and safety of the care.

“This effectively places Brunswick Surgery Center among the elite outpatient facilities for care and safety in the nation,” says Scott Hannum, MD, medical director at Brunswick Surgery Center. “We are extremely proud of our staff for achieving this national recognition, and more importantly, our patients can rest assured that our quality of care holds up to the same standards of any other accredited facility anywhere.”

Among the areas evaluated for accreditation are patient rights, governance, administration, quality of care, clinical records and health information, infection prevention and control, facilities and environment, anesthesia services and surgical and related services.

Any organization achieving AAAHC accreditation commits to participating in ongoing education, self-evaluation and peer review by AAAHC expert surveyors made up of physicians, nurses and administrators who are actively involved in ambulatory care.

“While the onsite survey is an important component of the process, ongoing compliance and continuous improvement are part of the accreditation maintenance mindset that a facility should integrate into its daily activities long after the survey has been completed,” explains the AAAHC website. “The intent of accreditation is for organizations to adopt policies and procedures that fuel ongoing QI and self-evaluation every day.”

To this end, at least once every 1,095 days (or three years), AAAHC surveyors conduct a thorough, onsite evaluation of the organization.

“The initiative is called 1095 Strong after that period of time between accreditations,” explains Anna Weaver, MSN, RN, CNOR, Outpatient Surgery Center Administrator for Brunswick Surgery Center. “During those 1,095 days, the AAAHC equips ambulatory leaders with the best of what we need to operationalize quality practices. As we develop everyday habits to provide the utmost quality care to our patients, we embody the spirit of 1095 Strong, quality every day.”

“This is not something that we achieve and then it’s over,” Hannum echoes. “We set the bar extremely high in gaining this status and then, in accordance with maintaining the accreditation, we daily rededicate ourselves to meeting and exceeding these stringent third-party guidelines. It’s a level of orthopedic specialized care that is both reaffirming and reassuring for our region.”

Located at 1168 East Cutlar Crossing, Suite 101, in the new EmergeOrtho building in The Villages at Brunswick Forest in Leland, Brunswick Surgery Center is the region’s first outpatient surgery center dedicated to advanced orthopedics and patient-centered care.

Brunswick Surgery Center is operated by 29 board-certified or board-eligible, fellowship-trained surgeons and pain management physicians from EmergeOrtho, who utilize the most up-to-date techniques and procedures to address a wide range of orthopedic injuries and conditions.
